Do I need to complete Level II first?

If you still need Level II, no problem. Level II + Level III can be taken together in one convenient bundle, making it easy to complete the training you need in the right order.

Do I need to be employed before I take Level III?

No. You can take Level III while you’re looking for commissioned security employment. After completing the course, you’ll have 90 calendar days to secure a Level III position and submit your application through DPS TOPS. Your employer will schedule the required Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI).

Will I need my own firearm for this course?

We recommend qualifying with the firearm you plan to carry on duty. If you don’t have one yet, SI offers 9mm loaners with 24-hour advance reservation; bring 50 rounds of American-made brass 9mm ammunition.

How long will my license be valid?

Level III commissioned officers must complete the required continuing education and firearms proficiency training every two years to maintain their qualification. SI offers Level III recertification training when it’s time to renew.
